In this post, I want to simplify the explanation of this condition, to ensure you understand it and what some of your treatment options are.


What is Hyperpigmentation?

Simply put, it is when an area of the skin develops dark patches that are darker than the surrounding skin.


What areas of the body can be affected by hyperpigmentation?

Any area of the body can be affected by hyperpigmentation. The face, hands, arms, back, legs or folds of the skin.


Are there different types of hyperpigmentation? Yes.

  • Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (Trauma) - Acne scarring, burns, bug bites, injury or allergic reaction to the skin.

  • Melasma

  • Sun damage


What are some common causes of hyperpigmentation?

  • Sun Exposure

  • Skin Inflammation

  • Hormonal Imbalances

  • Medication Use
